My Success, Your Success
There is no doubt that it is most rewarding to be able to help someone who is in a state of distress, uncertainty or beholden to addictions, undesirable behaviour or other problems. For me this is a great driving force, and added to this, and what gives me immense pleasure, is that I have been able to help people realize their full potential, encourage them and enable them to achieve more than they had ever thought of.
One such person, suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) achieved more than just controlling the IBS. He had refused career promotion because of his condition, but after having conquered the IBS, gained a promotion! There were things that he was interested in and things that he would like to do, but he lacked confidence in his abilities. I could see that he was a bright, intelligent man who was under-achieving. Along with the therapy for the IBS I helped him to go on and achieve goals that he had only dreamed of before. He also went on to learn another language, something he had always wanted to do, but had previously lacked the confidence.
Another client who came for issues around emotional problems was successful in her day job. She had never thought that she had academic ability but through strengthening her confidence went on to do a university degree.
One client came to me with obesity. She suffered at work from unkind remarks from a colleague and would dissolve in tears, run away without saying anything and resorted to yet another chocolate bar. Her diet was appalling and consisted mainly of take-away food. She had never cooked anything from scratch and did not possess a cookery book. Within quite a short period of time of working on her confidence along with the obesity, she was able to look her colleague in the face, open up a conversation and become in control of their encounters rather than at the mercy of the other person. This was a great outcome, but in dealing with the obesity she bought a cookery book and started to develop an interest in cookery, looking forward to planning healthy meals. She taught herself to cook and her life took on a new dimension.
In the area of life coaching a young man who was feeling really ‘stuck’ came to see me. He had a burning ambition to become a stand up comedian, but couldn’t see how he would fulfil this desire so did nothing about it. We successfully worked together on how he could achieve his goal with the fantastic result of his getting bookings in London and on the comedy circuit.
People have interests, goals and ambitions and I have been able to help them to achieve whatever it was that had been evading them. But some people achieved more than they had imagined and took on new, unthought-of challenges, interests and changes of direction. I consider this to be one of my areas of success over and above just dealing with ‘the problem’. With all my clients, a need is identified, met and goals achieved.
