Stop Smoking!
Be free from tobacco dependence. Enjoy the benefits of freedom from smoking.
You may have thought of stopping smoking before and have found lots of reasons to put off the moment of actually quitting. There are so many thoughts, beliefs and myths surrounding smoking, such as; it reduces stress, boosts confidence, withdrawal will be awful, it will be hard to stop when practically everyone around you appears to be smoking, you give up thinking about it because it is easier to continue as you are.
BUT every year thousands of people stop smoking. If they can do it, so can you.
You may have tried to stop before and started again. This is not unusual and most people stop and start at least once and some much more.
Don’t let all this put you off. I can help you with the habit, the withdrawal symptoms and how to cope with them and give you information which, through experience, I know strengthens peoples resolve to quit the habit
What would it be like if you never smoked again?
Take a few moments and you can close your eyes if you want to and imagine what your life would be like if you stopped smoking.
Imagine how healthy you would feel every day if you were no longer taking cigarette smoke, with all its poisons, into your body.
Imagine how much fitter you would become if your body’s processes were working to optimize your health and energy, rather than being damaged every day.
Imagine how happy and confident you would feel knowing that you had lengthened your life by years or decades, knowing that you had greatly increased your chances of avoiding illnesses such as lung cancer and heart disease.
Imagine how many thousands of pounds you could spend on things of value that will improve the quality of your life, not undermine it.
Imagine how things taste and smell better.
Just imagine……….
If you have done this imagining, then you have already started the process to rid yourself of the habit of smoking and becoming a non-smoker can be a reality!
Here is a testimonial from one of my clients:
‘This January, having been a regular smoker for more years than I care to remember, I decided to try hypnotherapy, one of the few quitting aids I had yet to attempt.
I wanted to find a practioner, with relevant qualifications and affiliations to official hypnotherapy associations. I chose Hilary Elliott.
Hilary’s professional manner made me feel confident and at ease. In an initial consultation we discussed my smoking habits in detail, including when and why I started, previous attempts to stop and why I relapsed. This alone was a great opportunity for me to face some of my smoking demons head on. Hilary gave me a collection of interesting fact sheets and I quickly realised my struggling attempts to nail my addiction are far from unique.
My hypnosis sessions involved sitting, semi- reclined in a comfy armchair with my eyes gently closed. Hilary talked me through a series of techniques to achieve deep relaxation. She encouraged me to visualize her suggestions in my mind as she spoke and as my breathing slowed I started to feel incredibly relaxed and calm. At no point did I feel out of control or uncomfortable and it is not possible to be made to do or believe anything you don’t want to.
With Hilary’s professional help and encouragement, I feel a sense of calmness and composure that I haven’t felt on previous efforts to quit. I have no desire to start smoking again. The initial withdrawal symptoms were tough, both physically and emotionally, but these really did soon pass.
Thanks to Hilary, my newly trained subconscious is encouraging me not to linger on the negatives but instead to enjoy the relief and liberation of being a non smoker’.
I have written in more detail about hypnotherapy and what it can be used for, counselling and psychotherapy, and other topics. Please refer to these topics to learn more.
How effective is hypnosis to help you stop smoking?
There is sound research to the effect that hypnosis is a powerful technique to reduce stress and also to activate a person's inner resources.
Smoking deludes people that it will help reduce and deal with stress. NO, this is untrue. When you smoke your blood pressure goes up. All smoking does is take away the temporary discomfort of wanting a nicotine top up. When you stop smoking, this discomfort goes away permanently. Smoking actually adds to stress rather than diminishing it.
How, by using hypnosis I will help you to stop smoking, no matter your reason for wanting to stop:
When you first started to smoke it achieved something positive for you.
Using hypnosis I will:
- help you to develop new and better ways of achieving something positive other than through smoking.
- help you uncover your abilities and help you overcome your perceived difficulty of quitting.
- help by providing a better way of reducing stress.
- help you to change old ways for new ways.
Your unique path to stopping smoking
For you to become a non-smoker I tailor your treatment especially to your needs based on you as an individual.
You can quit smoking no matter:
- How long you have smoked
- How many cigarettes you smoke
- How many times you have tried to stop smoking
- Whatever your age
- Whatever your medical condition
How long will it take?
This is a question often asked. Therapy sessions vary from therapist to therapist – from a single session of one or two hours, to a course of a set number of sessions.
As you are an individual your requirements are going to be different from those of other people. I structure my therapy over three sessions but this may differ from person to person. I have had clients who have stopped after one or two sessions.
The first session is one and a half hours and subsequent session are one hour.
I do not charge more for stopping smoking. I charge a flat day rate of £60 per hour and an evening rate of £70 per hour.
